Final Booklet

The final booklet was a good experience for me. It was my first time really using Adobe InDesign and forming any sort of printed book. After sitting at my computer for hours trying to figure out how to get all the pages to print in order, I finally gave up and went to Kinkos. I was very satisfied with the end results and intend on showing my artwork more often in this medium.

James owns a house in a suburb just outside of town.
Chima lives in self-made hut in a rural area refugee camp.
James’ wife Janet is a stay at home mother who does not need to work to help support the family.

Chima’s wife Uwimana works 50 hours a week to help support the family.
James’ son alex is currently enrolled in a private school and will someday attend a four year university.Chima’s son Gahiji will be enlisted in the Hutu militia during his adolescence.

Due to advances in American healthcare, James will live a long healthy life and live to see old age.
Because of pour healthcare, Chima will only live to see his 30’s.

The idea behind Mike and Chima was to critique a serious subject like poverty using a very playful medium. I used children’s book style illustrations as a form of satire to show the injustice between the lives of an average Rwandan man versus the life of the average American man. The concept was originally meant to be in a pop-up book format but seemed to work more effectively in a basic book layout.

The Voter Zombie!

The concept of the voter zombie came to me prior to the 2008 election. I found myself agitated that the majority of my friends were following a certain political party without knowing any of the party’s views. They would follow the party because it was what everyone else was doing. This reminded me of the mindless zombies in old horror movies who would move in groups and repeat the same phrase...”Brains...Brains”.

The idea behind the postcard project was to create a postcard that would help sway the opinion of the viewer towards your cause. My take on the project was to create a postcard that would be aesthetically pleasing and catch the attention of those who saw it. I believe that color is very important in communication and it was the basis of my card designs. Along with strong, bold colors, I also used simple text to display my message.
